The
following formulas and weight tables have been designed to provide the
buyer with the tools necessary to make objective decisions when purchasing
Galvanized Steel.
-
Note:
- The calculations, tables, etc. included have been offered by Pacesetter
Steel Service, Inc. Although titles may vary, most producing steel
mills and steel distributors publish similar tables and calculations
for the buyer's use.
Weight Tables
Note, these tables do not reference the "scale" weight for
steel.

Theoretical Nominal weights in this table are based
on 41.82 lbs. per sq. ft. per inch thick. Theoretical Minimum weights
are based on 40.80 lbs. per sq. ft. per inch thick (.2833 lbs. per cubic
inch).
- Note:
- SMACNA'S "Appendix A" references Theoretical Nominal Weight
in their square footage calculations. SMACNA accepts thinner minimums
than those shown as suggested theoretical minimum thicknesses.
Calculations for the Theoretical
Minimum Weight and the Theoretical Nominal Weight of Galvanized Steel
- Theoretical Minimum Weight
- Theo. Min. Weight = Minimum decimal thickness x 40.8*
x width (in feet) x linear feet.
(for sheets: multiply the total x the number of sheets)
-
Theoretical Nominal Weight (Actual Book Weight)
-
Theo. Nom. Weight = Nominal decimal thickness x 41.82**
x width (in feet) x linear feet.
(for sheets: multiply the total x the number of sheets)
Density Factors:
* In the Theoretical Minimum Weight calculation,
40.8 is the equivalent of one square foot of steel one inch thick.
** In the Theoretical Nominal Weight calculation,
41.82 is the equivalent of one square foot of steel one inch thick.
