The Life of Claudia Waters

Claudia WaltersWhen Claudia Waters joined Pacesetter Steel Service in 1978, our Company was less than a year old. As Pacesetter expanded and prospered, its accomplishments were, in large part, attributable to Claudia's tireless efforts, dedication, and commitment. As the Company's growth offered new leadership positions, Claudia was one of the first to be recognized. As Traffic Manager, Claudia organized a network of quality over-the-road carriers and achieved an on-time delivery rating second to none in the industry. She pioneered business partnerships and systems that evaluated critical performance criteria for Pacesetter's carriers, enabling Pacesetter to provide unmatched service to our customers. Upon being promoted to Director of Purchasing and Transportation and Pacesetter's Executive Committee in 1992, she expanded her rating system to include her steel suppliers. Claudia performed comprehensive analyses of vendor performance known as "The Power of Quality." She also negotiated mill contracts and diligently managed Pacesetter's inventory, earning a reputation for her honesty and fairness in communicating with our steel suppliers. She was respected, admired, and well liked by all who knew her.

Demonstrating to Pacesetter and the steel industry an ability to balance business with heart, Claudia's reputation transcended Pacesetter to touch the lives of her community. Heightening a civic awareness within the organization, Claudia coordinated Pacesetter's Partnership in Education Program with a local Cobb County elementary school. What began as a simple gesture of goodwill and citizenship ended with Pacesetter receiving the State Department of Education's award as "The Finest Business Partnership in Georgia" in 199X.

One of Claudia's greatest accomplishments was her involvement in the Atlanta chapter of the Association of Women in the Metals Industry. Claudia first served AWMI as Vice President and then as President from 1993 to 1994. Her involvement helped to attract national industry leaders and gain their active support for AWMI.

When Claudia was diagnosed with breast cancer, she faced the disease with the same courage and dignity with which she lived her life. Her unwavering dedication to Pacesetter during her illness kept most from knowing the suffering that she endured, but her brave actions showcased the unyielding tenacity of her spirit.

Claudia's life was brief but burned brightly. Her many years of friendship truly touched our lives. Her vitality continues to be a source of encouragement and inspiration to all us who knew her.

In Claudia's honor, the Waters family and Pacesetter Steel Service have established a foundation:
